Western Road was originally a track running from Brighton to the neighbouring village of Hove, but large houses were built along it in the early 19th century until it was almost continuously built up. By the end of the 19th Century, with the conversion of these buildings to shops and offices, Western Road had become the commercial heart of the town. Nowadays, the shop-lined street can appear ugly and devoid of points of interest. But above the shops, the original Regency style persists in places and architectural gems can still be found.
One interesting building on Western Road is the Gothic House. Originally built in 1823 and intended for residential use, the whole of the ground floor was converted into a shop in 1898 and has been in commercial use for more than a century.
Despite this, above ground level, the Gothic House retains some of its original grandeur: ornate crocketed pinnacles adorn the roof of the tower and, with its turrets and spires, it remains a good example of Regency Gothic architecture. The building is Grade II listed.
