The design of Balcombe Viaduct creates an illusion of infinity. Despite its length, height, and weight-bearing requirements, the builders were able to hollow out the piers between the arches without sacrificing their strength. It saved tons of bricks, with an added design bonus: looking through the quarter-mile pier, it looks like the bridge could go on forever.
Excellent image. The eye is really drawn into the ever decreasing hollows. There's a mysterious feel to the image, almost trippy like you can see the end but will you ever actually reach it. Looks good on black too, really brings out the detail in the brickwork :-)
I smile to see your great image as I have one or two very similar! Isn’t this a fabulous place for taking photos! Glad you have discovered it. Taking me down memory lane!

Despite the thundering express trains every 15 minutes, it is a surprisingly peaceful spot. In fact, if anything, the brief interruptions to the peace and quiet just add to the atmosphere of the place and increase the feelings of awe at its design and ability to last so long!
Definitely planning a return visit :)
