We have a cloudy sky with thunder. No blood moon to see. Gladly we have 365. Fav. for yours.

Well done, you saw more of it than we did, our heatwave chose to break with a wonderful thunder storm just half an hour before moon rise and its still pelting down at 11.00 p.m.! Oh Well, we desperately need the rain so no complaints!

Beautiful shot - one to treasure. I was not aware of this and while my son-in-law and my son took shots of the event (we were celebrating Michaela's birthday at my son's house) I only had my mobile and didn't even dare taking it out of my pocket.

Blood moon - Total lunar eclipse
With a complete lunar eclipse, the moon is in the conical core shadow of the earth, the umbra. There is no sunlight here. With this type of lunar eclipse the phenomenon 'blood moon' arises.

The moon itself does not radiate light - just as the earth does. It therefore seems strange that the moon turns red in the umbra, where there is no sunlight. This is because the atmosphere of the earth deflects the light, so that only the red and orange light with long wavelengths can pass through the atmosphere and penetrate the umbra.

Blue light with a short wavelength is spread by air molecules and air particles and does not reach the moon. When the red light falls on the earth, it is reflected and the moon gets a red glow. If the earth had no atmosphere, the moon would become completely dark during the eclipse.

Blood moon: The next total lunar eclipse can be seen on 27 July 2018.
