This is how white ants travel up a tree to destroy it

Aren't they the most ingenious of critters. I thought though that part of the tree may be diseased for the ants to cause it to die?

I understand that they move around the tree to avoid the heat of the sun. Nice capture showing textures and scars of the tree.
