Some Days Aren't All About Photography

...when you spend all day in the kitchen,cooking, for instance! Ken and I love to cook together..he's an excellent cook in his own right, and together, he's my sous chef (and, bless his heart,) he cleans up after me!

Since the opera students arrived in town, I've had the pleasure of attending three talks with some music, and I've met the students on their breaks in town. On the chance they'd be interested, we invited them to lunch, and I was told they're really looking forward to it as part of their "Lunenburg Experience"! At one point, with the faculty, I thought we might have as many as 18 people, but it was decided the students might like to have the experience on their own. We were then told Maestro Zedda & his wife would like to come as well...and I invited my friend who's the sister of the artistic director and another very involved friend who is an amazing chef & a vegetarian...she's preparing a vegetarian chili for at least two of the students. My neighbour, Billy, is putting together the deviled eggs, but isn't coming to the luncheon.

Can you read my menu?...we're going to have plenty of food...we did all the baking and pre-prep today and it'll go together easily tomorrow when we get back from the Market.

I don't know if we can impart to the young people how well we all, friends and neighbours, work together, and take such pleasure in making newcomers &visitors welcome!
Sounds delicious

This is going to be such a great experience....for you and for the students!! Yes, I think there will be plenty of food, and the company will be extra memorable!! Wish I lived around the corner! Have fun! They will love you....who wouldn't!! :-))

@summerfield ...add tag...check!
You're right about that recipe! A neighbour first made it for us at a dinner in her home...and she's a Cordon Blu-chef trained in NYC! She's one of my go-to people for good recipes! (Ken bakes these)
The recipe for the orzo came from her as well...lots of stir-fried onion, celery, mushroom & asparagus added and seasoned with fresh thyme & parsley...can't wait now for that first spoonfull! Maybe I should just photograph it all and add recipes for a week!

...and YOU! Banana Flambe?!!! Is that like "Bananas Foster" from Brennan's in New Orleans?! I can't wait for you to buy that ticket and come out here! Let's have a cook off!

Well hell! I thought it was a recipe for that pear and fruit crumble; not a menu for the dinner...I'll admit it looks like a yummy affair but I also have to say I'm curious about that crumble recipe!

@panthora Soul-bearing Truthfulness...I could not pass an opportunity to get to know 8 people who sound to me like they could become Opera Stars! AND, Maestro Zedda is already renowned in his profession... I'm more than happy to welcome them to a Lunenburg home, give them a good meal and sit back and absorb all they have to say! Tonight, three of the young women sang, and I stop breathing! Two (mezzo sopranos) sang together and it was like listening to angels! They're lovely young ladies...you'd notice them as attractive, even in their street clothes, but they step to the center, and you notice a poise...and then a note...and another fills the room and you wonder if what you're seeing is even possible! Elizabeth, the Californian in the group, told me that they all have a different story about when they came to know they could sing opera. Tomorrow I want to hear those stories!

@danette @voiceprintz @panthora @kerristephens @summerfield Alright already! After the party (which may go on after "the kids return to school") and the dishes have been cleaned and put away, I'll see to it that the recipe gets posted for you. It IS a taste sensation, in large part because of one little "trick" I've never used in other crumbles...and it's truly to die for! So hang on, we'll gather and chat about the party and have some leftovers together!

@Weezilou - a cook-off! that would be fun. i suppose i can just bring one camera and one tripod and lug my pots and pans and knives with me. i'm a sissy when it comes to cooking out of my kitchen. the size of the scraper would have to be just right, the towels has to be in endless supply. i am anal when i cook! hahahaha! the orzo salad seems intriguing and i wouldn't mind the recipe for that, too. or i can just look it up on the internet. yes! yes! photos and recipes together, that would be fun wow! can't wait to see them!

Louise, what a great thing to do and it brings you pleasure as well. It's lovely to make travellers welcome! In parts of rural Ireland the stranger will always be welcomed ( we stopped in Donegal when I was a child to see if I could get a dink of water as I felt car sick. The water came from a pump and was ice cold. We were then invited into the little cottage and were presented with a veritable feast. I think it grew out of the Celtic Church philosophy that an extra place should be set for the traveller as you may be entertaining the Christ child. Sorry for the ramble but your photo took me back almost 60 years. My branch of the family didn't have holidays. They were too expensive. I was with my cousin, an only child, on their holiday! In February she, Dave and I are off to Turkey to visit Troy, Ephesus, Pergamos amongst other places! Still holidaying together! The menu sounds fabulous. I'd never thought of visiting the Eastern coastal communities of Canada but your photographs have changed that!

I'm always so impressed with your giving nature and open arms to all who travel through Lunenburg. You're the best, Louise (and Ken). And now I know why you go back to California - to give yourself a rest from all these activities and parties. Enjoy! ;)

It all sounds like so much fun. We have always enjoyed hosting, not only all our international students over the years, but any visitors who arrive from everywhere to experience a new adventure, friends and family of our international students, etc. It's so rewarding for everyone concerned. Unfortunately, I am not the cook either you and/or Ken are.....
