When we arrived home this afternoon I went to our hummingbird's nest to see if she might be there, but she wasn't. As I walked out from under the branches, there she came toward me and to this same branch, same spot where she alights. This, therefore, is a nearly identical photo to one I took of her a few weeks ago, but I did take this this afternoon, and it's a daily record of what I see in our yard.
She's been such a fixture in the yard, we call her "Anna" as that's the type of hummingbird she is.
I wasn't aware that they stopped moving - always thought they were like sharks. ;-) Is this the mama? My babies are growing and moving now - I think the eyes are open, and was happy to see that mama located the nest so that it was protected from the rain.
Your relationship with the fauna in your backyard is really remarkable, Louise. You are a 'whisperer'. How delightful and amazing that Anna appeared to welcome you home...And rewarded you with this fabulous shot!
Also, are you sure that she is an Anna's hummingbird? I know I am not great with IDing the tiny little hummingbirds but the Anna's, I think, don't have the rufous bellies?
@kerristephens You could certainly be correct, Kerri...I looked at images of both and I'd be hard pressed to say, even from those pictures! Would be easier if I could see the male...that's much more definitive! Meanwhile, I think the name will stick as short-cut conversation when Ken and I talk about who's in the yard! I do appreciate any assistance, any time, otherwise! Thanks!
@peggysirk Thank you for that sweet and thoughtful comment, Peggy. I always feel fortunate that I can somehow connect with animals. For what it's worth, I always approach them by putting myself in their place and imagining how it feels to be them with me in their field of view...
A fantastic photograph its a fav. btw sorry I have not been able to make comments for the last few weeks , We wet over to Helens to look after Ed & Will, & the dogs whilst Helen & Mac wet to Mexico so she could do some research for her next book
Fabulous fav! Perfect and I love the bokeh, too. I keep watching for hummingbirds, but alas ... despite the feeder and the red flowers, none to be found :(
