Here in California, it's a bit of a joke that plastic straws have been banned when, otherwise, there's plastic everywhere! I think it really comes down to personal responsibility, but hey, that's the way I was raised...
Who knew I could turn a photo of this sweet hummer into a little mini political soap box... I took heaps of photos of the animals in the yard this morning, all entertaining the indoor cats with their noses pressed against the window. (Yes, I have photos of that, too...)
in ontario, plastic straws have also been banned. most restaurants offer paper straws. our office has boxes of paper straws that no one wanted to use once i (yes, me) pointed out that the box says "made from recycled materials". the thing is we could still buy plastic straws from the dollar stores. i know I've stocked up on it when i read that they were being taken out of stores entirely. so i have stainless steel straws that came in velvet bag with their own little brush cleaners. i also have a dozen re-usable plastic ones. the single-use plastic straws i make a point to be thrown in the garbage. it comes down really as to how the government disposes of the garbage which is one of the reasons they tax us poor citizens.
your photo is so beautiful, post-card worthy really, but my comments on the straw is much longer than my praise for it.
@summerfield Brilliant! Truth? I *bought* the bag of plastic straws in a grocery to use with smoothies. I can rinse them a few times. I would never leave them on beaches, and I fully agree it's another government mandate that doesn't address the bigger picture! (Visiting east-coast daughter, I asked for a straw for a drink in a restaurant; was told they don't have straws. I said I don't like ice against my teeth, so they gave me the tiny cocktail straws...you know, *The Plastic Ones*! Don't get me started on plastic bags! ...haha...and thanks for the hummingbird kudos! (Don't know what set me off today! ; )
@Weezilou - i could go on and on, especially with the present "epidemic". just when i decided i wanted to go to Italy in may that's when this thing happens and our office issued a travel ban to Europe! hahaha! staycation will be the norm at least for this summer -- and there will be lots of garbage, plastic or otherwise, on the beaches and everywhere careless and/or ignorant "local tourists" would go.
Well you two are preaching to the choir. None of us have ever thrown trash, plastic or otherwise, on a beach or a city street. I do not know one person who would willfully just throw stuff down and walk away. It’s always been a mystery to me as to who these people are. I love your feeder, your hummingbird photos are always so wonderful. @Weezilou
Love love love it!! How I want to see a hummingbird - top of my list of birds to see!! I love this capture - so beautiful! Gorgeous light and bokeh and the feeder is gorgeous.
Never use straws. Love it in glass. Great capture of this beautiful Hummingbird.
I do n`t know now, but in the past sure. Our country is build on it as the bases of the dikes are made of twined willow branches
Hummers are not usually political creatures methinks!! LOL. I still think it is crazy that when I was younger, we had everything in paper - paper bags from the shops, paper straws.......then we were told we were killing the forests and we needed to save the trees and swap to plastic. So we did. Now apparently we are bad for using plastic and should be swapping to paper.......
I want to stand on a chair in the middle of the street and shout "make your mind up!"
Almost forgot to say, beautiful bird. You are so lucky to have these amazing creatures by your home.
@summerfield@Weezilou my daughter is very plastic conscious and bought me the stainless steel set of straws - I also have the bags to put fruit in at the grocers....I think the issues with straws is because they are small and light they easily become waste in the ocean - I am still not perfect with plastics but I am learning :)
P.S we always take our rubbish with us or dispose of it responsibly when out and about - I don't understand the slobs who just leave it lying around :(
Lovely hummer, wish we had them here, super capture.
It’s frowned upon here too, I do have an old packet of re usable ones I am still using but won’t be buying anymore, metal ones from now on.
Paper straws are the absolute worst! I've got a great T-shirt to show you w/r/t the straw crisis. I also have my mama hummingbird back. She's plopped on the eggs right now. Hope the nest survives the rain!
