Golden Moments

Each evening at the golden hour, Mama duck settles to watch the sun go down; it's been fascinating to watch her rituals! For me, it was back to the dining room window, choosing angle and light over any better clarity!

It was so sad to return from a morning doctor appointment to encounter two drakes and two drowned babies in the pool. Having seen them make some aggressive moves a few days ago, we're quite sure they've done the damage; Nature can be cruel. The survivors have hearty appetites, and we find them to be so comical as they make tiny leaps from the water to snap at bugs overhead!

Saturday we have grandkids we haven't seen in over a year arriving for spring break. We'll have no shortage of entertainment to offer them!
This is such an incredible series! Love the golden light in this image.

@taffy Thanks Taffy! It's been such a long time since anything interesting has happened in the back yard...which has been my outside world for the most part during this past year!

What lovely light -- but how tragic the loss of some. How many are left?

Mama looks quite content in this shot. All your duck shots are terrific. How exciting to have them in the pool and yard. Your grandkids will love them.

Golden moments for sure ...for you and them both!

@jyokota 3 little graves, and 9 babies left... Ken's put 3 little stone markers over them...they brought us joy and will be remembered!

@redy4et How funny is it, Betsy, that I never did get down to the wetlands, but after waiting patiently for a year, I have a water-fowl saga unfolding in the back yard!

@lynnz Thanks, Lynn! This is going to be about as close as I'll get to country wild-life in the southern California suburbs!

Beautiful capture, but such a sad story. Hope you had a lovely time with the grand children.

Ha cool. Her sister was walking on Kleinpolderplein this morning. She came from Die Bocht ( https://www.google.com/maps/search/die+bocht+rotterdam/@51.9326363,4.4420393,844m/data=!3m1!1e3 ) with her offspring and caused a standstill for all traffic in any direction.

Too adorable

Enjoying your ducks!

@mastermek Oh dear! These ducks "live on the edge", don't they?! No human would want to be responsible for hurting those precious babies! I love reading that, even on that freeway, traffic waited for them! I suppose most survive, as I read they are the most ubiquitous duck world wide!

@tinley23 @joansmor @casablanca Thank you all! And thanks to these ducklings and our grandchildren who will arrive on Saturday, the routine of daily life has some lighter moments thrown into it!

I'm back again today, checking to see if you an update on your darling duck family! Love seeing all the pictures and reading about them. Have a beautiful weekend, Louise.
April 17th, 2021
Oh how sad that she has lost some of her babies! How lovely that you have a visit of the grandkids today! I know you are going to have a wonderful time with them! Xx
April 17th, 2021
@lynnz Thanks for checking in, Lynn! I hope I'm not overstating it, but the Mallard Drake is running us ragged trying to keep him away from the pool; we're down to six babies...half of the brood a week ago! I do have lots of photos of them, but am taking a segue for the hummer and another weekend photo of the drake... Hoping to keep the babies alive through the weekend! Grandkids arriving today, so backyard activity (that mama doesn't seem to mind) that might hold off other animals! A good weekend to you as well!

Thanks for the update, Louise, even if it is very sad to read that the drake is killing the babies. Nature can be cruel. I know you will enjoy your time with your grandkids.
April 17th, 2021
Oh how devastating, Louise. So sad over the loss of these sweet babies. Nature can be cruel. I owe you an email and life got in the way...off to watch a grand boys baseball game then a drive to Tahoe. Enjoy your family visit! :)
April 17th, 2021
Sweetness. Nature can be cruel but it has its balance. Bittersweet.
April 18th, 2021
Enjoying the baby duck photos and hope you enjoy your grandkids. A lot changes in a year with them that we have missed.
