Rather than bemoan the loss of so many of the ducklings, we took action when we realized the mom was taking them for long walks and I think they were exhausted! We blocked her exit from the yard and the remaining two are thriving and growing! They're quite used to our presence; I was just across the spa to take this photo. They're sitting and watching as Ken power-washes the patio! On a funny note, Mom had left briefly, as she sometimes does, and a drake landed. Ken and I laughed in amazement as one of the "babies" kept trying to chase him off! What amazing instincts! Additionally, once we had corralled the last of the ducklings, I had Ken buy them some "proper duck chow"... Momma loved it, but in the following days the babies were finding unfinished cat food they seemed to enjoy. As raising ducklings is a new learning experience, I now set out bowls of softened cat chow and they inhale it! I can't argue with the success as they seem to grow bigger daily!
I was amazed when I realized you'd taken an earlier photo of all the ducklings to the TT page! Thank you for enjoying them as much as we are!
@haskar I understand! The local mallards have a huge park with lakes within a mile from us, but everyone I know around here has ducks in their pools as well! They'll leave when they're grown, and "sadly", I won't be able to tell them from others when they return!
@tunia We were away for a week; I need to get back to posting! These ducks fledged, and about 3 days later, a different duck and 7 ducklings were in the yard! We put what we learned into early safety measures, and now, a week later 6 of the 7 are thriving!

Summer is almost over, and now I’m planning a trip to Nova Scotia, the Lunenburg area in September with my sister. I’ve never been to the East coast and have had a very busy summer taking care of my mother’s affairs after her passing in July. We are looking for a relaxing holiday where we can take some lovely photos!
Just wondering if you have some suggestions of places to visit and photograph?
