Having lived in the Islands for eight years as a child, my memories are of a time when people like my grandmothers arrived on passenger ships, were decked in leis by family members greeting them, and they stayed for several months at a time. Hawaii was still a territory and not a state, and it was long before the building boom and influx of tourists.
We went into Lahaina this morning, perhaps Maui's best known town, that began with a fortress in 1832. There's a famous Banyan tree in town, photographed by my father, and since, by me, and it will probably be there still for generations to come as it was planted in 1873. It's difficult to photograph its enormity as it covers a city block. But I digress...
Here are some old and bent palms that have draped themselves over the harbor on Front Street, and if my father had photographed them, they would have looked just like this (back in the late 40s)
Beautiful shot, and wonderfully processed! I did not know that you had lived in the Islands as a child.....what a precious time that must have been! You were probably able to run around freely with no cares in the world....glad you are able to revisit that place and times!
@panthora Yes...well said! When I started school I was sent home with a note asking me to leave the shoes at home... Little wonder I've never enjoyed wearing shoes since!
You story is just an opposite of mine.
After the war my parents could n`t buy me shoes so I go to school on wooden shoes. I `ve to leave them in front before I get in .
At last I got a pair of leather shoes.
I was so careful with them I did not get into the house but leave at the entrance, near the front door . Then they has been thieving . I`ve to use the wooden shoes again. My memories said I got some shoes from the school church after it.
I'm just catching up Louise but I realize I've missed that you're in Hawaii for a bit. This shot is such a vintage Hawaii shot. I have been lucky to have visited twice, the last being my honeymoon with Greg. Such a beautiful spot. Trade you, I'm sitting here watching another 4" of snow fall...again. We just had 10" Sunday night. Hope you are enjoying your trip!
