Maki and I crossed paths while visiting Maui, and she said she thought it would be fun to travel and see more of the world with me. Before leaving the Islands, it was her request to throw a luau for a few friends, so we laid out an array of fruit and filled a calabash (behind the plumeria) with luau favorites, buttered toast bits, pink guava bread, broccoli bits and walnut pieces. As the sun went down, the guests began to arrive, but the cardinals were, surprisingly, a no show. We lit tiki torches and and tutu played the ukelele and sang old Hawaiian favorites. A marvelous time was had by all as Hawaiians are known for comfortable family gatherings in a most congenial atmosphere. And if you've been invited to the luau, "then you're family". Aloha ♥
What a lovely story. I love all the local words you have introduced us to. Maki is certainly one lucky monkey to have become part of your family :-) I'm sure she will appear again on a regular basis!
