On the rocks by abhijit

On the rocks

I took this shot (and 50 others) for a popular comp. Would like honest opinion on this. Theme is wind.
Model is my wife who always puts her hand up when I need someone to pose
I like the silhouette. I think it would be better if the cloth was higher at the end, so that it was not over the horizon. Somehow that would feel more open or free to me. And I know this is being kind of finicky, but is your horizon sloping to the left? I am a bit OCD about crooked horizons.
But I do like the curve of the cloth, and the fact that it is see through.

I think it's beautiful and free.

@stuckinoz @carolinedreams
Thanks Janelle. I was thinking the same. I have another shot where the cloth is higher over the horizon but this one has a better curvey shape to it, so I went with this.
I appreciate any critique on this. Be as picky as you want.

Love the silhouette and the softness of the fabric. Great capture Abhijit.

@abhijit I know this would be a tricky shot to get right - you need to be there on a really windy day and yet you still want the curves in the cloth. Glad you weren't upset by my comments :)

@louiesphotos @stuckinoz Thanks Louie
Janelle, definately not. I want to get this shot right.
Do you know which comp this is for?
September 1st, 2012
@abhijit I'm wondering if it is for the Canon Eos comp? The one where you get the 5 things in a box? Otherwise I have no idea. Can you tell us?

ab, this is fabulous! the silhouette, the sheerness of the fabric/scarf, the shapes of the rock. i like the curve of the fabric/scarf at the end although like janelle @stuckinoz i would have preferred for it to be just a tad above the horizon. however, the fact that the inside edge lined up with the horizon it also works quite well. i'd prefer to have seen this in colour though; i'm thinking a golden glow or a red/orange-ish colouring, but of course the black and white lends more mystery and drama. and you're lucky you have a willing model at your disposal. treasure her! great shot, my friend.

@stuckinoz Yes it is. Photo 5.
@summerfield thanks :) appreciate your thoughts on it.

@abhijit Did you get the box? Or can anyone enter, even without the box?
September 1st, 2012
I love it! Personally, I like the curve of the cloth very much. I love how you can see through the cloth...gives it an open, airy feel. Even the clouds seem to be "blowing". I don't see the horizon as sloping because the surf is straight. Good luck on the contest!

@stuckinoz I entered all 5 briefs last year so will get box next week without entering the open brief. Otherwise you can enter the open brief (wind) and get a box. Anyone in Australia can enter

Beautiful, love the B&W.

FAV - this is beautiful. I love the B&W and the scarf is amazing blowing in the wind.

I like the silhouette and the movement in the material.
I'm not sure if the material should be higher or not - I like that it follows the line of the rocks the lady is standing on.
I might be tempted to darken the left corner a little too. Might just be my monitor, but I find the slight line of detail in the rocks a little distracting.

Love this!!!! Really wonderful in silhouette and love the scarf to help depict the wind!

Beautiful B&W! Wonderful composition, I love the way the cloth flows so nicely & the transparency of it. Gorgeous background & silhouette, fantastic job!

I really love this shot, its awesome in b/w fav for me

In terms of composition I very much like this as is. Whilst I understand the comments about the cloth falling over the horizon, it's not a big deal to me. With regard to the processing, b&w looks right to me as does the silhouetted figure and rock on the right. In contrast to Humphrey Hippo, I'd like to see some more detail in the left foreground ... well either that or burn it out entirely, but I'd favour the former.

Beautiful in the B&W but I would love to see color too especially as it might come through the fabric.

Mmmm! Now here's the altogether different view. Can you find a location which doesn't have rocks at the LHS of the frame...just a smooth flat beach or an ocean? I love the movement in the sari and I love that you have your model as the highest point in the composition but I find the rocks behind her a distraction

I think it is beautiful. Love the movement and b&w.

Wow what a wonderful shot, mysterious and fantastic in B&W

The silhouette is beautiful! Lovely composition. There's a big jutting rock on the left and it keeps pulling my eye back when I really want to see the lady with her scarf, so it's a little distracting.

This is awesome - love the set up and silhouette - fav

Nice silhouette - the Wind brief is a tricky one, I didn't really know what to do with it.

Love love love love this. Fav!

I think this is great! It shows a kind of freedom, beautiful!

This is a fantastic photo. Great shot.

wOw a very beautiful silhouette shot..... ♥
September 2nd, 2012
Wonderful shot! I like the composition of her on the right and the scarf looking as though it could float endlessly on the wind which is why I agree with @swilde on this one if there were no rocks other than the one your wife is standing on it would give it the endless feel. I like the position of the scarf, the part over the horizon does not effect the final image as in the comp description you can say that "this is representing the strength and unpredictability of the wind how something you are unable to see in itself can have such a great effect on the little things in life". Overall a wonderful shot and b&w is perfect leaves things up to the imagination!! fingers crossed for you!!

I agree with those who think the fabric would be better slightly above the horizon line but I LOVE the shape of the material-it reminds me of the infinity symbol-and the way the cloud follows the line of the fabric. The odd shape of the rock on the left is a bit distracting but the balance with dark and light is great. I think the B&W is perfect too.

fave - fantastic shot - lucky you to have a willing model! I love the b&w - it has a sort of exotic feel to the shot - not sure why.
September 3rd, 2012
Love the silhouette & the curve of the fabric but agree it could do with being a bit higher though the shape is excellent!
September 3rd, 2012
Great shot! I agree with some of the other comments, I think I would like the details of the rock and the her collar etc to be inky black to draw all of the attention to the sheer fabric.
September 3rd, 2012
Awesome composition. Love that it is in B&W! Well thought out! Fav for me, too.
