I give up. I don't really like shooting landscapes, and it shows. I don't like sunrise, I don't like planning, and I'm not that keen on using my tripod. Despite that, I've spent hours and hours trying to compose and shoot a fall landscape that captures the gorgeous colors we have this year, and I just can't quite get it (refuse to do that sunrise thing). It's too bad, too. We don't generally get colors like this because just about when the foliage turns we get a hard freeze and it's all over. This year, though, the freeze has held off and the colors are breathtaking. So ... noon time desperation shot. I think this will hold the memory for me, so I'm done.
I think this is quite a good landscape, with the distinct layers of color, foreground interest, and cliffs beyond. I might have made it more of a pano by cropping down about halfway from the sky. The real interest is in the trees and the cliffs, and half the sky would be enough to set all that up. And the 2/3 - 1/3 of ground to sky would probably work well here too.
@taffy Oh dear ... I did half again didn't I ... years and years ago when I tried my first landscape Snaggy said ... 1/3 - 2/3, not half. And yet here I am again. :-/ . Thank you... Even though landscapes aren't quite my thing, I would like to do better.
Nice narrative and a lovely shot. I share your difficulty with landscapes, unless I have something specific to focus on, like a remote house or something.
I agree whole heartedly with Taffy, I have been trying to remember the 2/3 to 1/3 rule when shooting. This is a sight I have been following lately to try to improve my shots. https://petapixel.com/2016/09/14/20-composition-techniques-will-improve-photos/ I am waiting patiently for fall to come in full beauty. It started early and came to a halt and now nothing is happening.
