A few weeks ago the Game Commission contacted my mother about conducting a study on the disappearance of the mule deer in the Pine Ridge area. There are lots of white tails, but I haven't seen a mule deer in ages. (Mules don't like being around white tails, so as the white tail population increases, the mule population drops.) Then, of all things, this very calm herd of deer caught my eye just down the road in a windbreak. There are a dozen or so, with several bucks and does. They let us get some photographs, before finally moving away. Only in looking this morning did I realize these are mules. Of course they stayed ...they are so much calmer and more curious than white tails. I'm so glad to see them! I love their big ears. The white tails can stay up in the trees on the ridge. I'm perfectly happy to have the mules down here on the corn fields and pastures.
