Jekyll Island Club Hotel

In 1886, a group of society’s wealthy elite - the Astors, Rockefellers, Goulds and Morgans among them – incorporated to form the Jekyll Island Club, a private winter hunting and recreational club. Architect Charles A. Alexander was commissioned to design and build a 60-room clubhouse. A six-unit apartment building, named San Souci was erected in 1896, becoming America’s first condominiums. In 1901, an annex was constructed to handle the expanding needs of members. Between 1888 and 1928, several members built "cottages" on the island, offering more expansive and private accommodations. The club thrived through the early 20th century. its members came from many of the world's wealthiest families, However, the club closed at the end of the 1942 season due to complications from the 1930s depression and World War II. The island was later sold to the state of Georgia.

The state failed in their attempt to operate the club as a hotel. After a $20 million restoration in 1986, the Jekyll Island Club Resort Hotel opened, bringing grand style back to the island.

Jekyll Island is located off the coast of Georgia and run by a self-sustaining, self-governing body.

And it is such a gorgeous place! We were there on our boat at the little marina so we didn't stay at the hotel but we ate and drank there, road bikes all around the island and enjoyed it immensely. Your picture really captures the grandeur of the hotel!

@stownsend Thank you Suzie. We were on a tour, and we did stay in the hotel two nights. Ate in the Grand dining room...... Our room in the 1901 annex had a "parlor room" connected........ rattan table and two chairs, windows that opened.... Talk about niceties!! Weather great till the morning we left, and it was pouring rain. We loved it. Don'''t get rain here! Haha! We sat outside under an awning and watched it pour! We flew home that afternoon form Jacksonville airport -- and ran into a good friend from here at the airport. Could not believe it. Small world.
