When returning home from a country outing today, my partner and I decided on a whim to visit a small lake in the area to do a bit of birding. When we were last there in January, we spotted a couple of rare wood ducks we had not seen before. This time, upon turning onto the entrance road we noticed the adjoining trail was now lined with ROCKS we had not seen before.
On closer inspection, we discovered they were all uniquely painted, with their artist's imagination being the only limitation. Apparently, a local woman who was trying to think of something fun to do with her kids during the pandemic started the "rock snake" last August. She placed a few painted stones near a walkway we had never been on (and thus hadn't seen as yet) and with a small sign located near the snake's head informally invited passersby to add to it with an idle curiosity of how long it would get.
Suffice it to say, the City is now considering submitting this ever-growing project to the Guinness Book of World Records as it has grown to extraordinary lengths with people of all ages and abilities adding to it. We personally measured it to be at least 4/10ths of a mile long and we didn't even get to the whole thing. I mean it's pretty awesome to find a random painted rock here or there placed by a fun-loving or kind-hearted soul, but this was truly mind boggling and so delightful!
Certainly not the type of birding we were expecting, but super cool. ...and way easier to shoot I might add ;-D
Soooo great! The collage and the story behind it. I just love it. Before the pandemic, I used to pick up stones from places in my town, paint them and put them back. Or pile them for people to pick them up. But this is soooooo great!
