'The Crossing' in question is a small wooden bridge over the River Thames, just outside the village of Kemble, in Gloucestershire.
The Thames at this point is not very wide, deep or fast flowing, being about 4-5 miles from it's alleged source rising 360 feet (110 m) above sea level.
