Humans haven't always used written words to record thoughts, facts and information. For generations information was passed on through story and song; it was most likely the development of agriculture (plant domestication) that provided the trigger to record information, on wood, wax, clay, stone... then later in ink on parchment, and now it can even be recorded electronically and communicated from one side of the world to the other in a matter of seconds.
While we probably lost some important features of our civilisation after its development, without writing there would be no science, limited medicine... and no 365!
(On the subject of technology - the computer shop just called me - my laptop is dead :( Apparently something got spilled on/it a while ago and all the components have failed. I have to see if it's covered by insurance. At least it was quite new so I didn't lose much in the way of pics or data).
That's one to make you think! So true. Maybe we don't do enough of the handwriting ... depend too much on electronic .... it is very nice to get something through the post ...
Bummer. New means better chance of being covered too. With writing I do wonder what we're losing in the rush to all electronic. As an archaeologist I sigh at the lack of enduring physical records!
Ugh. Losing a computer is rough these days. We rely one them so much. It's like our lifeline to the world around us. Love your writing post. It's so true. We are people who need to communicate with each other and the world around us. We are driven to communicate.
wonderful post, Alia, very thoughtful and thought-provoking. regarding your loss of your laptop, hope all goes your way. just replaced my pc tower and am very happy.
Great idea for a pic! I love the write up as well. Very well said. I also like words typed out in whole and not "text speak" as I really can't understand half of what's said when they use it! If you are going to write an email, use whole words! LOL.... Great shot! Well done!
Sorry to hear about your laptop.... Invest in a 500g portable hard drive. They are around $100...well worth it if your computer crashes. I back mine up DAILY! I can't afford to lose any photos or downloaded iTunes music. I do hope your insurance covers it. Depending on where you got it and if you got the extended warranty it may cover for a new one. That's another thing I always purchase - extended warranty on anything electronic, including computers. And my vacuum cleaners. I don't ever have to pay for repairs! :D
I love handwriting too... of course I use it at school every day but sometimes wonder if folk forget to use it now we have computers, texting etc. (I do my 'g's like you :) )
Sorry about the computer - what a ponk. Fingers crossed the insurance comes good
good perspective on writing, both photographically and philosophically. people depend on them too much. i probably do, too, but that is because i have carpal tunnel syndrome and can't do a lot of manual writing. well, i got the CT syndrome from using too much of the computer. so go figure. hope your laptop problems are over by now.
