And they'll take a mile."
If that isn't the motto for Land Rover, it ought to be. Here is what i learned on a website devoted to Land Rover paraphernalia:
Your Land Rover was designed to go places that the average vehicle doesn't quite dare and a Land Rover winch is designed to get you out safely if you should encounter an obstacle or situation too tough even for your Land Rover. The perfect addition to the vehicle of an off-roading enthusiast, a Rover winch not only offers a means of getting you out of trouble, but also gives you the opportunity to play the good Samaritan. There are a variety of Land Rover winch options, so you'll have to spend a little time thinking about what will serve your needs best. The weight of your vehicle is a major factor in which Rover winch you choose, as that will serve to determine how much pulling power you need for it to provide. The general rule is to use a Land Rover winch that is capable of pulling one and a half times the weight of your vehicle. Trying to pull more than that can damage the frame of your vehicle, which, unless you were trying to save a life, would not be advisable. And, have no doubt, a Land Rover winch on a dark, deserted road on a bitter cold night can safe a life.
Now that is technology at its finest!
Evertime a see a Jeep-like vehicle with a winch - it makes me think of "the Gods Must Be Crazy" - great film. The guy is so busy watching the woman in the bushes that the winch on his jeep pulls so tightly that his jeep ends up hanging from the tree limb.
I love your winch photo. I always thought that trucks with winches were owned by boys with big toys -- that is until this past winter. We had a huge snow storm; got stuck in a line of traffic with nowhere & no how to move; after 3 hours the Fire Dept LandRover came by with a winch and rescued all of us. NOW I think that vehicles with winches are gorgeous.
