American History 101

Time for a little pop quiz on American heroes. All these paintings can be seen in the National Portrait Gallery. Take your time and see how many you get. I'll even give you some clues.
Top row (from left to right):
1. Folk hero, frontiersman, soldier and politician; King of the wild frontier.
2. First United States Secretary of the Treasury; Born in Nevis in the British West Indies. Some believe it was his enemies who introduced the requirement that a U.S. president must be born in the United States,
3. 50th anniversary of this president's inauguration is this week.
4. The Great Emancipator
Middle row:
1. Principal author of the United States Constitution; 4th president
2. His wife; rescued portrait of Washington from White House when British set fire to city during War of 1812.
3. Founder of University of Virginia, principal author of the Declaration of Independence; 3rd president.
4. (in round frame) Father of his Country.
Bottom row:
1. Sauk chief, lent his name to the frontier war that gave Abraham Lincoln his one experience in soldiering.
2. His adventures—real and legendary—were influential in creating the archetypal Western hero of American folklore. This 1820 painting by Chester Harding is the only portrait made from life.
3. Author and printer, political theorist, politician, postmaster, scientist, inventor, satirist, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat.

How did you do? If you need the answers, I will post them tomorrow.

Very nice idea to create a historical collage for us and then tax our brains all at the same time!

@hwy61 I sent the link to the 4th grade teachers, and they are going to test their students on Tuesday. There are a few they might not recognize but i would hope the clues would provide the answers.
