I don't completely understand the message on the side of this moving van, but it is clear to me this is a portrait of a gay couple. This has not been a public message in Richmond til recently. In researching this trend, I learned the gay community spent over $800 billion dollars in 2012. Many brands now actively target the gay community, as even the most conservative execs have come to realize "that there's just too much money to be made from well-to-do, happy-to-spend GLBT consumers".This may sound cynical, but realistically, full inclusion in the economic culture is a significant step forward for any marginalized group.
Update: A FB friend commented that she thinks this is a portrait of a father and son, which means I misread the message totally. However, if that is the case, I can't even tell which is the father and which the son.
I think more and more people are becoming open to equality in all aspects of life, whether it be in the choice of lifestyle or religion. I enjoy my freedom of choice, so why wouldn't I want to acknowledge another's?
I thought it's a father and son, too, with the father being the one on the right. Since we moved my husband's parents into a senior living facility, I have noticed that many of the children of residents are at least fifty and many who visit are in their sixties and some in their seventies. Sometimes it's hard to tell if one is a child visiting instead of two residents. Parents who live to be 80 or 90 can easily have children in their sixties or even seventies these days! Now, that is something to think about.
