When I read the announcement about this, I had no idea what a crowd this ceremony would attract. At the beginning of the exhibit back in April, the visiting monks created this sand painting over a period of 4 days. It was then covered until this morning when the monks in a sacred ceremony destroyed the picture as a symbol of the impermanence of things. The program took 30 minutes but was not completed til the monks reassembled at Maymont Park where they scattered the sand in rushing water. I did not attend that part of the ceremony. I am also posting a bit of the chanting that could be heard as they whisked the sand away.
