Started to open the car door and saw this unusual insect resting there. I've never seen anything like this before. The colors made me think of pants made out of really wild fabric. Thus the question.

Ailanthus webworm moth is its full name. It looks like a beetle because when the moth lands it rolls it wings up so that they lay flat against its body like a beetle.
This is the first year that I have noticed them as well -- I first saw them on milkweed plants/ flowers.
