Yesterday, I found this nest on our front lawn below our tree. Next to it was a sweet, little unhatched robin egg. It was a bit of a sad find as it probably blew out of the tree. I first took the opportunity to snap a photo or two and then the kids placed it in some bushes and covered the egg with cotton balls, leaves and feathers to keep it warm and soft. My kids are hoping that it will hatch and we will have a pet robin. I told them that it probably wouldn't work out that way.
The title is inspired by Roald Dahl from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I am on a kick with him these days, reading the 3rd of his books to them this summer. This morning they also watched "James and the Giant Peach." I love his funny, weird, twisted sense of humor. I can relate!:)
That is a shame but it makes a beautiful photo. Been watching spring watch on the TV here. Apparently you have to look at the overall picture of survival and not get upset about the ones that don't make it! So the guy says anyway...
A beautiful picture of the egg and nest. Perhaps Mum will come back and find it? Hope the kids aren't too disappointed...
My son adored all the Roald Dahl books too and i loved reading them to him.
Too bad that this nest fell with the egg beside it. I would put the egg back inside, put it in a safe place in your yard and give it a few days and see if anything happens. Love the color of it and your photo, Amanda. I also love the nest. We took one down that was abandoned on our overhang last year by a Robin and this year was used shortly by doves and abandoned. The nests birds make are so fascinating. Though the doves are a bit clueless about making nests. Learning a lot. Sounds like you are having a fun Summer with your kids. Enjoy, it goes by so fast.
Beautiful and sad at the same time - would love for that egg to hatch - pop it in the airing cupboard! Love RD - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is one of my favourite books ever! : ))
@aleksandra I figured you would like this processing, my friend. I have been really processy lately trying out all kinds of things. Thank you so much for the fav!
@michaelelliott That would be pretty cool. I did find sitting on the nest rather awkward, though, and the thought of regurgitating worms and bugs kinda grosses me out. I doubt that it can hatch without it's mama warming it. Poor thing. It was in our front lawn.
I'm always saddened by the troubles that befallen animals and nature. For whatever reason I am sensitive to the plight of our feathered, furry and otherwise vulnerable friends. Nice story though in how you made this an educational moment for your kids. Pretty photo too.
A mixed photo event for sure. Sad for the egg content, but makes such a great photo of both nest and beautiful egg. I guess one thought is to set it under a very warm light to create an incubator (we actually had one of those when I taught 4th grade) to try to hatch, but I suspect that it's already too late.
Such a sweet shot. Love the composition and that beautiful egg. Sad that it won't make it. Nature can be so brutal. We are big Roald Dahl fans here. The BFG was one of our favorites. :)
@amandal Our summer is going well...almost done with baseball & looking forward to lots more weekends at the lake. Did I read that you're going to the NY meet up? Soooo jealous! Have a fantastic time. I'll have to make sure & be back on here just so i can check out your shots!
@edie Thanks so much for that, my friend. It had a vintagy feel with the processing, I thought. I have one more to put up sometime soon that reminds me of your style a tad.
@nadaa I want to be able to watch a nest again someday. It's so precious!
@rennes can you believe I've never read that. Must fix this summer. We've seen the movies and love them (really the old school, Gene Wilder one...the new is creepy). Thanks, Lisa!
Thank you all for your lovely comments about this sweet egg and nest. Last I checked, the egg was cold and unattended. Not surprised. Glad that it at least got to be a sweet shot. Today I noticed that it made PP and that made me smile. Really appreciate all of your support, friends!
