I'm convinced of it now. Every time I come around, he flies away. I wanted to congratulate him yesterday for his great showing on my project last week, but he took to the sky as I approached him again.
Yesterday, while out walking in the sun to warm up, I noticed him too late and his perfect reflection in the still water. On the way back, I armed myself with camera, parked the kid and dog and walked over hoping to give him a high 5. Instead he mooned me, but I got another decent shot of him so I guess it was all good.
This is an incredible shot. The others are easy, this is difficult yet you nailed it. Fav. Do you think maybe bringing your pupster makes him twice as nervous? My dogs would see it and think SUPPER!
@misterkitty Amber, you crack me up. I'll offer that next time. Today I did give him a verbal thanks and he didn't fly away. Granted I wasn't walking at him with a camera aimed.
It's not just you Amanda! Herons tend to be unsociable! Only one time have I gotten really close to one. I was sitting on a dock by a lake and one was working its way around the shore fishing. I sat still and watched until it was 30 feet away from me. I wasn't into photography back then so I didn't have my camera with me. Still a great sharp capture!
@eyesmile Aw, thank you sooo much, Miss Gena. Really appreciate your kind comments and fav. Your enthusiasm is the best!:) I'm like that a bunch, too, and it really makes the photographer feel appreciated:)!
@dauber Thanks so much for your kind words and fav, RL. Last night I shot powerlines and thought of you:)!
@sugarmuser Aw, thanks so much for your great comments and fav, Sharon!! You are the best!
@kevin365 Thanks so much for your great comments and fav, Kevin. I appreciate you appreciating the words. I love to do that part almost as much as the photography end of it.
@riverlandphotos Thanks so much, my sweet friend. Yes, maybe the pup makes the heron more nervous. He is usually fine unless I walk deliberately toward him (and really it is to make him fly). Appreciate your fav, lady!!
@bristolrose Thanks so much, Miss Kathryn. You are so kind!!
Nice capture of the rear, I'm convinced it is that big 'eye' that scares them away 8-) Sorry for the lack of comments, I've been away and trying to catch up.
@cimes1 Really appreciate your great comments and fav, Carole. Thank you!
@rachelwithey Thanks so much for that, Rachel. I so appreciate you, lady!
@northy Sometimes, you gotta park the kid. She was in a stroller. She's 4 and a bit on the lazy side. I can't be bothered with holding her and listening to her whine as we walk as I struggle with the dog and stopping for photos occasionally. Thanks, friend!
@tonydebont No worries, Tony. No pressure. Glad you are back. I enjoyed your cruise photos. Thanks for your comments. And I think you are right about them being camera shy. I actually can get pretty close to this guy. They are used to all of the people around the lake, I think. And I always greet him when I see him.:)
Wow....now that's amazing. Love this. So jealous. Spent all summer trying to capture a great blue heron. Without my zoom from the old camera, I'm left trying to stalk quietly up to the river banks, and sneak a shot. I'm like a ninja, creeping quietly like a breeze through the leaves. Apparently what the heron hears is an elephant charging through a field of empty soda cans. Lol Fav
@losthorizon I think that mine is pretty comfortable with people. He's been around the same spot everyday lately that i walk or run by. And he stays there unless i approach him directly. Luckily I have a zoom lens and he flies slowly and gracefully over the water giving me time to get a shot or two off if I am ready. Love your fun description of your attempts. Thanks for the kind comments and fav, my friend.
@kali66 Hey, thanks for the encouragement.:) It is surprising how tame seeming (if you will) or at least comfortable around humans the herons are. He is typically fine standing on the shore unless I am directly approaching him. I've learned to do this with my camera ready and have been pretty lucky with shots a few times. Love to see them soaring low and gracefully over the water.
Great shot! I once chased a heron down river in a canoe for nearly two miles trying to get a good shot...every time I would get close he would fly further down river just out of reach. I like to think it was his way of saying, "Come away, O human child! To the waters and the wild" :)
@kirtcarter LOVE your comments and story. Thanks so much for them and the follow. Right back 'atcha!:)
@darsphotos We won't be as close to the lake that I've come to love when we move. I will still have to drive over for a walk or run maybe once a week. And I am sure that I will love living with woods around us. Maybe I will see more wildlife like deer. Thanks kindly for the fav, my friend!
@amandal It will be nice to have a change and you will not know what you will see till you get there. Cool, I am ready to see you take photos of deer. You are very welcome my friend.
Thanks, Jo! Love all your great wildlife shots!
