Torrs Hydro at New Mills

This is the UK’s first community owned and funded hydro electric scheme.
Torr Mill used to stand on the site and the weir was built over 200 years ago.
The hydro scheme uses an Archimedian screw and started generating electricity in 2008 at the rate of 240,000 kWh annually. There is a fish pass to enable brown trout to swim upstream.
