Dockside Reflections by andycoleborn

Dockside Reflections

So, it's day 1 of year 2 on my 'original' 365 project... And it's off to photograph the setting sun once again after work. May as well take advantage of the cristal clear skies we're having at the moment..

I planned on jumping on the DLR to South Quay, one of the old London Docks, on the Isle of Dogs thinking the sun would be setting at the end of the dock but unfortunately, it was going down a little to the left so the view wasn't how I hoped. Maybe a couple of weeks ago I would have caught the sun in the right place.

I should also add, for 2 years, this was almost the exact view from my desk... Great view/crap job....

What this shot has told me though is this would make a great night time long exposure shot. Think I'll have to drive down here one night tripod in hand and give it a go.
Like it.

Wow, this is beautiful. It's great when a seemingly familiar scene is captured in a way I haven't seen before. Fantastic shot, and well done on persevering with your 2nd year btw :-).

Sounds like a plan - a long exposure shot - perhaps with an N-Grad filter to really smooth out the lumps. Nice shot Andy.

@ellida Cheers, need to check out these filters as I understand they hep with long exposure shots during daylight as well...

i like the lighting of this photo for the time of day. Nice peaceful feeling. I do think it would be great as a long exposure photo. Nice job on this one.

Thank you everyone... I plan on taking this on Saturday night, just hope they leave the lights on :-)
@Swazzette The office was about 10 foot back from the dock so spent many hours looking out of the window, watching most of these tower blocks being built actually... @Cherrill Bet you beat me to it :-)...

Beautiful job!
October 27th, 2010
Love this. :) So serene, despite it being a shot of a place that's no doubt incredibly busy.

HD
Andy, great photo. Is it an HDR?
October 28th, 2010
This is beautiful -- sunsets can be beautiful even when surrounded by city buildings and even when not exactly where in the sky we would like the sun to be. I have also noticed that the days are getting shorter and good place to catch a sunset or photo after leaving work is now too dark when I arrive there. I admire that you have plunged into year 2 !
October 28th, 2010
@devanago Thanks... Not HDR, that's something I haven't tried yet..
@junebug Thank you.. Know what you mean about the evenings getting darker.. clouds go back this weekend so will be dark when I leave home in the morning and dark when I return :-(...
