Mine tragedy

This monument is a reminder of a tragic mine disaster in Ribolla. In the morning of May 4th 1954 a tremendous explosion takes the lives of 43 miners and destroys the entire Camorra Mime. This was the worst mine accident after the Second World War. Every year the community of Ribolla gets together on this day, to commemorate the lost miners.
Even in this days the history is still present. Right at the centre of town is a small museum, which shows the terrible conditions, the miners had to work in, health and safety was basically non existing. The man had to work at a depth of 250 meters with very poor air supply. No wonder that such an terrible disaster could happen and killing 43 young man, which left wife and kids behind.
Ribolla is 5km away from where we live and it is the nearest town to do my shopping. Ribolla has no old part which you find in Tuscany almost everywhere, it was only build to house miners and their family. For me, it is the most unattractive town, it has nothing, apart from a few little shops, 3 bars, post office, pharmacy and a supermarket. Not an attractive place to spend your day.
Very interesting sculpture and history
