Melbourne Gateway

One of the most visible and contentious freeway art commissions in Melbourne is 'Melbourne Gateway' at the city end of the City Link.

The 70m yellow cantilevered piece, visible on the L:HS of the photo) is colloquially known as the 'the cheesestick', and the two line of thin red blades cantilevered across the freeway as 'Jeff's zipper' after Jeff Kennett, the Victorian Premier at the time of the installation. Designed by architectural firm Denton Corker Marshall and opened in 2000, the installations have, over time, become welcome icons especially for those arriving into Melbourne from the West.
