The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Mary is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney and the seat of the Archbishop of Sydney, currently Anthony Fisher OP. The cathedral is dedicated to "Mary, Help of Christians", Patroness of Australia. St Mary’s holds the title and dignity of a minor basilica, bestowed upon it by Pope Pius XI on 4 August 1932.[2]
St Mary's has the greatest length of any church in Australia (although it is neither the tallest nor the largest overall). It is located on College Street in the heart of the City of Sydney where, despite the high rise development of the Sydney central business district (CBD), its imposing structure and twin spires make it a landmark from every direction. In 2008, St Mary's Cathedral became the focus of World Youth Day 2008 and was visited by Pope Benedict XVI.
A lovely architectural shot... wonderful detail. Actually, an amazing amount of detail in this shot. :) I like how you have composed it to demonstrate the contrasts of old and new.
@rosiekerr amazingly that was my intention in the taking - it is often not the case lol - I usually snap away merrily and think about things later - 365 I must admit has made me more thoughtful in the taking now
I remember visiting this cathedral when there a year ago- I was transfixed by its architecture but what was going on inside was even more so - some procession and service to do with Malta and the war!
