I think perhaps you were holding rat a little too close to the camera for it to focus on rat. Perhaps if you are able to place rat somewhere and move yourself back a few yards, and focus on rat, then the background will also be nice and sharp with your focus set on infinity - at least that's the way it works for me when I want ti sharp front to back. I focus on the close thing, and the background is sharp enough.

@seacreature trouble is I'm on slippy rocks! and I won't get down on the ground! - all sorts of things impede the shots that I'd like (mostly laziness!)
