In Portugal it is a strong tradition to eat roasted chestnuts and in the street, between November and December, small stalls are set up in the street that roast chestnuts at the moment in conical pans. People eat hot nuts like popcorn!
Every Christmas I hear the song about chestnuts roasting on an open fire but I have never tried them. I like the idea of being able to buy them from a stall on the street. A great tradition.
The scientific name is "catanea sativa" and is a common tree in southern Europe:
