The Unsung Hero

Today is a sad day in Edmonton. Edmontonions learned today that Joey Moss passed away at the age of 57.
Joey Moss became a household name back in 1985 after hockey superstar Wayne Gretzky convinced the Edmonton Oilers to hire himas a locker room attendant.
Joey was born with Downs Syndrome. In 1986 the Edmonton Eskimos hired him as a team attendant.
He served with both teams for many years. In 2003 he was the recipient of the NHL Seventh Man Award given in recognition of service to the league behind the scenes.
In 2008 he was the subject of this mural as part of the Giants of Edmonton mural series.
In 2012 he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Award and in 2015 he was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame.
He will be truly missed by this city
That is so sad. A wonderful life cut short. Condolences to his family and the community.

What an emotional story of courage and perseverance! He is well-worth honours he achieved. This convinces me that not all the world is lost but that there are beautiful and maybe unsung souls around us.

What a lovely story of a great man and his time with the hockey teams. We have fond memories of Wayne Gretsky from our time living Regina, Saskatchewan in the 70's. Our two young sons were great Wayne Gretsky fans and happily learned to skate and play hockey so they could play like Wayne!

57 seems so young- but what an impact he had! I love the story of his life- dedicated, faithful, supportive and an over-comer- he will continue to be an inspiration in your city's history and this mural will keep his memory alive.
