What is considered by many as the most elaborate house in Edmonton. This is the McGrath Mansion. Built in 1913 by real estate developer William McGrath. This 14 room house, built at a cost of $76,000, had all of the most modern features.
Central heating, electricity, swimming pool in the basement, burglar alarms and telephones in each room.
McGrath passed away suddenly at the age of 51 in 1921. His wife Ada lived here until 1931 when she fell into financial difficulties and could not pay the taxes.
She eventually moved out and lived with her son. The City of Edmonton took possession of the house..
It sat vacant until 1937 when it was rented out as individual suites.
In 1949 the Ukrainian Catholic Archdiocese moved in. They bought the the property in 1953.
In 1975 they sold the house and it once again became a private residence.
It is once again up for sale. The asking price a mere $5.25 million
This is a magnificent house. Happy to hear it was restored. When it was built in 1913 for $76,000 it's equivalent cost with inflation is just over $2 million. Sounds like a good deal.
14 rooms???
