mange by blightygal

mange

One of the four squirrels in the garden has developed a bad case of the mange. I wrote to a fox rescuer online as they had an article about mange on squirrels too - and they kindly sent me some meds this morning. I just gotta get the medicine into a wild squirrel now, lol.
I want to try because of a few reasons - mange kills animals slowly and horribly, it spreads to other squirrels and also humans. I dont fancy those mites much!
WOW nice shot!!!!!!!

Poor squirrel.

Oh... and best of luck... you may need it.

Can you mix it into some peanut butter or something? I bet they'll eat that. Mind they eat anything don't they. You could just put the medicine out as it is!

It's nasty - some of our local foxes are looking really ropey wth it - I didn't realise the drugs were edible - at least you don't have to rub it on!

Poor little mite. I didn't know squirrels got mange. The suet chunks I put out for the birds seem to go in seconds, you coulod stuff it in that. Mind you, I agree with Richard, they will eat anything!

.. ah, but how do you ensure the one with the mange gets the meds?

Poor squirrel! I hope you can trick it and give it the medicine. Wonderful focus in this shot!

I have no idea how you are going to get the meds into the squirrel, but I sure hope it works! Best wishes!

poor little mangy critter! Might be a varmint but that's awful for him. the other squirrels will make fun of him. You got a great shot with great detail out of it though.

@rich57 fab idea! I was thinking peanut butter sarnies yesterday, but thought it sounded daft - I dont think so now you've said it too ;-) Luckily the meds dont harm squirrels or birds that might eat it too, so should be a winner?!

@msk1p2 The other squirrels chase her away! They dont normally do that with each other, but aww....

The mental picture of you trying to give the wild squirrels their meds, made me laugh. I need a photo of how this is going to be done. Poor thing... glad you are trying to do something about it.

Poor little baby. You're such a good person to find the meds and give them to the squirrels. I'm sure others have suggested this, but, just put it on the bird food, unless it's harmful to animals without mange or to the birds.
My squirrels are especially fond of bread - maybe try that. I've had squirred in the house before and got them into a cage with apple slices with peanut butter on them.

@sytse Thanks Kathleen, apple is a good idea too - they seem to like the slices I throw out time to time - Will try with peanut butter, the birds prob leave that alone :-)

Poor baby - wouldn't have thought of doing that - hope she takes her medicine.

Poor thing. My squirrels love dried corn on the cob. Sold for the birds but the birds weren't having any of it (especially the small ones), the squirrels were loving it.

Another such a sweet squirrel. I so much hope that you succeeded and he got the medication.
