So...my hospital job just got super weird. For the last six months, my hospital has been depending on using travel nurses, travel techs, etc. Now that the Covid relief money is no longer coming in, it means the funds that paid those premium wages for those workers is gone, which means that those workers are gone too. So, that means our hospital is officially short-staffed, which means that those who are left have to pick up all the extra shifts. Long story short, I don't want to work that hard, so I essentially quit. And by "quit" I mean I resigned from my full-time position and will only do PRN (aka: as needed). I will now only work shifts that I sign up for and can not be told to come in on my days off anymore. Whoo-hoo! Love it. The downside is that I will now have to go on my husband's health insurance which is way more expensive, but I don't even care. Sometimes life isn't purely about money. Life is about maintaining a healthy work/life balance.
100% it’s not about money all of the time - for the sake of your own health and sanity, and for that of your husbands, it sounds like the right thing to do!
Happy to hear this… I've been worrying for some time about the toll your work was exacting on your health. Take good care of yourself and those you love.
Perhaps with more peace in your life you’ll have less call to use the health insurance in the future?? Thanks for sharing your reflections, I hope it brings you more joy.
@kartia ideally, I wouldn't even get health insurance at all save for catastrophic coverage, but America doesn't offer such a thing. It's all or nothing around here. I just don't want to go bankrupt in the off chance I have to get my appendix taken out.
@vignouse ya, it's been a long few months and things have only been going from bad to worse. Staffing is a huge issue and we keep losing more people, including myself (partially).
Good for you! Sorry about the insurance, but your mental health and peace of mind is very important. I had a somewhat similar decision several years ago, agonized about it and now am at peace with it. Financially not where I wanted, but sooo much happier! I wish you the best.
