The tower is a 47-storey skyscraper in Manchester city centre. It was completed in 2006,and was designed by Ian Simpson.
At a height of 168 metres (551 ft), it is the tallest skyscraper in Manchester. It is the ninth tallest building in the UK and the tallest building in the United Kingdom outside London. It is the tallest residential building in the country and third tallest in Europe.
@humphreyhippo Cheers H, do I like it? Not sure...the city is a proper mish mash of fabulous Victorian buildings and more modern ones, some awful, like the Arndale centre, some really striking like this and Urbis (the new national football museum) and also the new Co-Op HQ which is almost finished and is a fabulous glass edifice. This is a bit out of place as most of the modern buildings are off to the left in this shot but I think the developers placed it perfectly because on almost all the major routes into the city from all directions you see this directly in front of you. Strangely that sticky up bit on top is some sort of grill affair which makes an audible noise in the wind...Granada tv complained about it coz it was causing havoc with their recordings of Coronation St! So the builders 'tuned' it for them!
It has a very futurist feel to it, almost as it could slide up and down like a slide ruler (before my time!). I see that I can stay in it at the Hilton, which I won't as I don't like heights!! And nor will I be buying any of the apartments! Interestedly it is one of the thinnest skyscrapers in the world - is this a good thing? In regards to your shot - I do like the fact that the sky and the skyscraper are of a similar colour.
Love the shot, but it doesn't exactly seem 'in keeping' with its surroundings, is it? Do you like it?
