dispela taragau stolim sampela kakaruk em bilong mi

Restorff Island, West New Britain Province. After a lazy dive and snorkel, we all jumped back into the boat for roast chicken sandwiches. This must have been a standard tradition for this boating crew because as soon as the first sandwich was unwrapped, a Brahminy Kite and a White Bellied Sea Eagle flew from the tree tops and circled the boat. A large piece of chicken was wedged onto the end of a long stick and these two magnificent birds of prey flew down and each took a large chunk of chicken back up to the tree tops for their own lunch.

I got a cool photo of this Brahminy Kite taking off with the chicken in its talons, but I like this one because of the way its eyes are focused on the chicken sandwich in my hands.

Photo taken 26th January 2008 at Restorff Island, WNBP. Title reads: This Eagle stole my Chicken.
Great shot, love the color and the transarent look of the wings.

January 25th, 2012
Oh Jason, this is magnificent, a big Fav
January 25th, 2012
Magnificent shot. Fav!
Not far from here, there is a nest that the brahminy kites share with sea eagles. BY chooks also seem to know the sound the osprey makes when it flies over.
January 25th, 2012
Wow. Amazing. Fav

@belphenstone @cromwell - Thank you chaps, and Richard, with your profile pic like that, I can only hear Dr Evil's voice when I read your comments!

@eryck - Oh thank you Eryck :)

@filsie65 - Thank you Phil #:0)

@robinwarner - I am a big fan of this Kites but often they are flying away from me, this one and his habits of a free lunch made for a great opportunity!

@beautifulthing - 10minutes later it was raining, wet and stormy so this was a lucky moment.

@onie @corymbia - thank you ladies and thank you for the faves. My poultry know when the Whistling Kites are around, and the Ospreys (which is a rare occurrence). The Wedgies and the Sea Eagles have the birds running for cover.
January 25th, 2012
He's gorgeous, love the backlighting, wonderful to see the feather details, I love the raptors so fave
January 25th, 2012

January 25th, 2012
@bobfoto , exif said f=108mm, wow that's pretty close!
January 25th, 2012
@wahyusp - it is a bit of a crop. I found with how close they were coming, I didn't want to zoom in at 300mm and miss out. So I backed off the zoom and decided to crop later.
January 25th, 2012
A M A Z I N G !! Have to fave this for sure, the whole image is perfect.
January 25th, 2012
@judithdeacon - Thank you Judith, thanks :)

January 25th, 2012
Beautiful! Watched a bird of prey circling our building today and wished I had a nice zoom. Great shot.
January 26th, 2012
Spectacular. Gorgeous color through the wings.
January 26th, 2012
beautiful........looks like a huge wingspan
January 26th, 2012
I would love to dive there, great POV on this awesome bird!
January 26th, 2012
Gorgeous shot, Jason! I wonder if that would work with the hawk I'm stalking? :0)
January 26th, 2012
@geocacheking - they are a great bird to watch in flight!

@otprofsp - Thanks Susan :)

@mjmaven - Not a huge bird MJM, but a wing span of around 1.2m (just under 4ft).

@httpgeffed - beautiful place for a swim. The boat I was standing on taking this photo was surrounded by heaps of lovely fish. I think they ate some of my sandwich too!
January 26th, 2012
@cjwhite - raw meat is best, so say mince meat and placed on a post in a clearing but to one side of the clearing. The bird needs to feel that it is comfortable in taking some food, so a bit of cover for protection but the food needs to be easily seen and in good light. Maybe try chicken flesh in strips???
January 26th, 2012
@bobfoto I know the perfect spot. It's a place where I've seen him hunting. Thanks!!! :0)
January 26th, 2012
@cjwhite - That is a perfect spot. If you have seen him hunting there, then that is a comfortable spot for him. You may need to check on some info on the type of bird you have. Some need to rest to feed but some birds of prey can eat on the wing. So a bird that eats on the wing needs a spot where it can fly in and fly out in one swoop. Mimicking their needs will get you results.
January 26th, 2012
fantastic capture Jason!
January 26th, 2012
@bobbyj - Thanks Bobbyj :)
January 26th, 2012
Very cool shot! Wonderful light and contrasting colors. I've helped capture and band raptors, they are so majestic up close and personal.
January 26th, 2012

January 26th, 2012
Excellent capture. I have tried to photograph red kites a few times around Leeds but with hopeless results.
January 26th, 2012
@sangwann @dhartley - Thanks Dione and Debbie :)

@terek55 @jenirainbow @clarissajohal - Terry, Jeni and Faerie, thank you :)

@kdimagery @will_wooderson - These are a beautiful, I was a little disappointed that the White Bellied Sea Eagle did not fly overhead like this Kite. The Sea Eagle is a much larger bird and very impressive in flight and size!

@maggie2 @catsmeowb @claireworx - Thank you Margaret, Camille and Clarissa. Not at all scary Camille, it is unlikely that a Bird of Prey like this would show aggression to a human. I hope.
January 26th, 2012
@fueast - I got very lucky on this day Alison. I once was at Lagoon here in Australia where a pair of Whistling Kites were being fed and even in those kinds of set-up situation, it can be tricky to get a good shot.
January 26th, 2012
birds - aaawww. had a crow at a campground come down and peck at my head once, he was a pest. do not care much for roosters, either, although i adored my geese because they loved me and hated everyone else! boy, could they chase people - and the school bus, so mal gave them away. i was way upset to come home and find them gone. webster did look awesome chasing that bus, HONKING, the kids laughing inside. big white bird.
January 26th, 2012
@catsmeowb - yeah Crows are not that well behaved and Geese make fantastic guards! Poor Webster, I'm sorry that Mal gave him away. :(
January 26th, 2012
love the light on the feathers
January 27th, 2012

February 1st, 2012
how do you still a bird in flight and get it sharp and close and wondeful
i get the landscape clear and nice and the bird moving and not nice.
fav
February 1st, 2012
@glendq - I got very lucky here, as this bird was coming down towards me and was just about to stall and swing away to the right., so he was almost stopped. I did back off the 300mm zoom, back to around 108mm and then cropped the shot afterwards. Shot on Aperture mode with that set at f4.2. I think I had the focus on centre spot and centre weighted for light so that the bird was dark.

I raised the shadows up a little in post so that the feathers really shone!
February 1st, 2012
@bobfoto
nice, very very nice.
i have tried really hard to get some birds - flying over the lake when we are moving in the boat the opposite way... never works for a sharp photo, but I keep on trying.
ski boat and long lens are a funny mix, eh.
thanks for telling me what you did. So you used AV?
February 1st, 2012
@glendq - On Olympus, I think it is called S+AF+M so that is Set+Auto Focus+Manual. Which means it focuses when I half press, but I can adjust manually.

The other version is where it continues to focus on a moving subject and no I did not try that.
February 1st, 2012
I'd let that eagle steal my chicken sandwich, too. He's just beautiful.
February 3rd, 2012
@aj1268 - I was happy to share.
