Narapela San ol i dai pinis tasol. by bobfoto

Narapela San ol i dai pinis tasol.

So this is the end. A whole year of looking back from a time that once was. I spent three years accumulating some 16,000 photographs of a country that had often intrigued me as a kid growing up. I never dreamed of living there, but I often wondered what the place was like.

As a boy I remember the Melanesian wing of the local museum, seeing the shrunken heads and distorted skulls. Reading stories of cannibalism and tribal art. My young mind would imagine a world that time had forgotten.

I remember collecting stamps, and I discovered four or five brightly coloured large stamps from Papua New Guinea that depicted garishly decorated masks, adorned with feathers and shells, and my young mind would engage in fanciful dreams of tribal drums and *ahem* bare breasted, grass skirt wearing, women of the Pacific.

I had a school chum whose father was what we called a modern day explorer, he had dived in the warm blue clear waters of PNG and trekked the rugged mountains. He brought back spears and shields and carvings from a world of adventure, of savages, of natives, of mountainmen. We sat in awe and listened to his tales of excitement.

I had a school teacher who said to me "one day you must stand at the foot of an active volcano" and I never believed his words would ring true.

As a young child, Papua New Guinea was a place found in books, in museums, on Attenborough's documentaries, in dreams. The opportunity to travel there and live there in 2006 was one that I did not hesitate in accepting. I had so many reasons to go and very few reasons not to.

I have loved this year 2 version of the 365 project, a retrospective look back at three amazing years. It has been a cathartic process and I have appreciated all of your wonderfully warm comments, they all have been read and held dear.

This is my final retrospective shot for the 365. Tomorrow I start a new story, and dear reader you shall receive new photos, I will relish the challenge once again at taking a shot each day. 2013 is gonna be a cracking year, I'm looking forward to this journey.

Thanks to everyone, you know who you are.

Photo taken 24 December 2006. Port Moresby Harbour on fire as the sun simply sets.
Wonderful final shot and reflection! Now when is the book coming out? :P
December 30th, 2012
@archaeofrog - Hopefully soonish. This is the first time that I kinda have put together a definitive collection of my time in PNG, and that was step one of the process. Gotta kick step two into action now!

Jason, I just happened on your photo to end 2012, and read of your adventures in PNG. Now I will have to go back to January, and follow your adventure one photo at a time, lucky me to find your site.
December 31st, 2012
You've ended this year on a high note Jason, awesome adventure - thanks so much for sharing.
December 31st, 2012
Awesome sky, loved all the wonderful pictures, especially the portraits. The stories have been a joy to read.
December 31st, 2012
lovely shot for the sun setting on 2012 and retrospective year. Your words resonate strongly with me, realising childhood imaginings of far off places and even down to the stamp collecting and seeing the places they originate from. Standing at Borobudur after seeing a grade 2 teacher's photos was one of those moments for me. Makes me wish I'd done a more consistent job with my retrospective year too
December 31st, 2012
I've really enjoyed stopping in to check on your PNG shots now and then. This last shot is such a fitting one. Happy New Year Jason.
December 31st, 2012

@fjh - Thanks Francesca, the portraits are what I love best about PNG, I have a photo album of 200 prints all of people of PNG and its a gorgeous thing to look at!

@lbmcshutter - I ended a few months with sunsets, so thought it right to end the year with one. I loved the project this year, but it was just as challenging as the first year. The third is going to be crazy!

@bella_ss - Thank you Sheralee, I thought of you once again when driving through CT, not so long ago. Might only be one more journey for me out that way for the meantime.... ;)
December 31st, 2012
@bobfoto Maybe you should drop in for a coffee? Can I ask what you do out here?
December 31st, 2012
@bella_ss - if I stop for a coffee, then yes, you could ask me.... ;)
