Beetle

Prologue Epilogue

I figure when mankind stepped out of the pool and headed towards its multicultural future in finding greener pastures, it took one of two options; to build a home and stay put, or it could remain a traveller, living the nomadic existence of eating when hungry and sleeping when, well when sleepy.

But modern life brings new ways of travelling, disposable nomadicy where one can pretend for a week or 6 to be someone else, embiggened with the sense of return and security. One can even vicariously live amongst others in websites such as this and experience beauty and unbeauty of worlds otherknown.

The world is amazeballs. Simple. We all need to eat, we all have different tastes, we all need to rest at night. As Iggy Pop once sung every motherfucker really needs a home.

Seriously does someone call their daughter Destiny?

to be continued...
Love it!

January 6th, 2013
Crazy lookin' bug!!! Love the background!
January 6th, 2013
@melwolters - Thanks Mel, Mt Beetle loves you too!

@jankoos - We call 'em Rhinoceros Beetles.

@sam_cr - Cool looking bug, cool looking....
January 6th, 2013
Certainly, yes, every motherfucker needs a home. I'm not sure if you were joking about the name or I'm missing the joke. But Destiny, I've always hated that for a name. :) Wonderful shot! Ferocious looking beetle! I'd step on him first chance I got.
January 6th, 2013
Fabulous shot of this one; I love these. @mandyj92 You're not serious, are you? About stepping on it, I mean... Why would anyone do that?
January 6th, 2013
Oh, and a fav. for me. I really miss seeing these; they don't come this far south.
January 6th, 2013
Absolutely bloody brilliant!
INSTANT +FAV
January 6th, 2013
@girlie I'm not a bug lover. To each his own. And I would only do so if it were wanting to bite me. ;) I ignorantly assume it bites.
January 6th, 2013
Oh cool shot again, Mister! Great DOF too. Monika (@monika64) also shot one of these fellers!
January 6th, 2013
RAAAWWWWWRRRRR indeed! We don't get these. Well I've never seen one.
January 6th, 2013
another amazing picture!
love the narrative just as much. :-)
January 6th, 2013
just can't help thinking of Darth Vader when I see this. Brilliant photo. Fav.
January 6th, 2013
What an amazing beastie-looking bug...I'd be far happier if this guy decided to stay put rather than follow nomadic tendancies. Nice to see it through the screen and know it's never likely to come and get me in the middle of the night... Great shot. (Tell me this is a macro shot...?!)
January 6th, 2013
Cool beetle person. Love his armour.
January 6th, 2013
I'm a big fan of beetles - would love to meet one personally - you have done a great job of this, Mr Beetle will be asking you for a canvas print for his burrow !
January 6th, 2013
January 6th, 2013
he's an awesome looking beetle - I don't think I have met a rhino beetle before

I was saying the other day that some names parents give to their children could be considered child cruelty
January 6th, 2013
Fantastic close up
January 6th, 2013
This beetle is lord of all he surveys and darn well knows it.
January 6th, 2013
that's one sturdy dude, it's amazing what people call their offspring
January 6th, 2013
A little prehistoric monster!
January 6th, 2013
I love these guys, we've had quite a few here recently.
January 6th, 2013
Great find, nice shot.
January 6th, 2013
wise words! and such a cool poser there in your shot! :D
January 6th, 2013
@mandyj92 No, they don't bite; quite harmless, just look ferocious.
January 6th, 2013
What an incredible creature! Up close and personal :-) interesting musings Jason....no doubt you will be hearing from a Destiny soon!
January 6th, 2013
nice shot
January 6th, 2013
I want to see one of these but not sure we have them. I saw a dead rhino beetle once....this is so clear and light is perfect! Fav! What is not clear to me is what Destiny has to do with it. :0)
January 6th, 2013
Amazing capture!! Wouldn't want to tangle with that!!
January 6th, 2013
Wow! Fantastic shot! Such amazing details!
January 6th, 2013
You're quite the poet. And what a magnificent-looking beetle to go with it.
January 6th, 2013
Awesome shot!
January 6th, 2013
lol nice!!!
January 6th, 2013
@mandyj92 - well I hope you are wearing sturdy boots then, because these bad boys are a little big for squishing! When these guys fly at you at night time, the most common reaction I have seen is to run away from them and wave your hands around your head... hee hee hee. Oh and they're not the biting kind of bug, you can pick them up, they HISSSSSSS a lot, but you can let them crawl on your hand. The little claw kinda leggies hold on tight though!

@lbmcshutter @houdiniem @Cherrill @espyetta - Seriously, when I heard that Mother call her child "Destiny" yesterday, I was tempted to go up and ask "You're joking?" Who does that to a kid?

@girlie - They are cool guys to have around the place, love the noise they make when you pick them up!

@gphelps5 - Thanks Bulldog! Cheers!

@ozziehoffy - Thanks Cassandra! Nearly went with a Cass...

@onie - You need more dung? These guys love it.

@camerada - Thanks Camerada :)

@kandernob - They do look like Darth Vader... they make a nasty Hisssssing noise when you pick them up too!

@filsie65 - they fly at night. Oh and yes, 2x converter and 35mm f3.5 macro. So 70mm macro set at f7.0 for that narrow dof.

@swilde - Thanks Sue :)

@alceyone - Thank you Anne, these are very cool guys to have in the garden!

January 6th, 2013
@monika64 - wonder if it is an omen? Perhaps the rain is about to come?

@doodlerdeb - Thanks Debra :)

@digitalhermit - Lord of the Flies?

@winnedreamer - he's no monster, just a nicely behaved bug that likes poo.

@bella_ss - must be the season for them?

@fjh - Thanks Francesca :)

@agentzuckerguss - oh they do pose well... do you like my backdrop?

@abhijit - Thanks Abhijit!

@carolmw @groovygirlrn - Thanks Carol and thanks Sheri. :)

@jannaellen - Why thank you Janna #:0)=
January 6th, 2013
@bobfoto yes i do! :)
January 6th, 2013
@grammyn - Thanks Katy!

@rsantos - Cheers Rayner :)

@agentzuckerguss - I had this little guy holding onto this old dead branch and I carried him around the garden looking for the right back drop. This one looked the best!
January 6th, 2013
@bobfoto again: a good eye you have! :D
January 6th, 2013
Scary looking beetle! Amazing detail though!
January 6th, 2013
YIKES, glad to hear they don't bite. That would scare me, flying at me in the night.
January 6th, 2013
seriously - what the????? fantasmical capture.
January 6th, 2013
Looks like a warrior!
January 6th, 2013
@bobfoto I've got a better one even than Destiny. We were at the beach the other day when a woman started calling out 'Reality!' Reality!' Didn't know what she meant until a little girl suddenly ran up in answer to the call.
January 6th, 2013
What a beauty.. That is an awesome shot.
January 6th, 2013
im surprised that he actually let you carry him around without hissing or flying off - love the photo
January 6th, 2013
@girlie you got to be kidding....Reality...how can you do that to a child
January 6th, 2013
@ruthhowell I am not kidding; we are still gobsmacked over that one.
January 6th, 2013
We have several Destinys in this area. Most seem fairly well adjusted. One of the latest baby names I've seen is "Denim". Good thing polyester isn't popular now. Cool bug, and you posed him beautifully.
January 6th, 2013
@ruthhowell @girlie - No way! Now I never condone violence against women, but that lady deserved a slap! Isn't there some kind of test we could introduce prior to people breeding?

@rvwalker - You never know, Polly is a nice name. ;) I have seen Denham (pronounced Denim) used. Lycra would never work!

@michelleyoung - Thanks Michelle :)

@tthompsonca - They are a fearsome beetle!

@stepheesue - Thanks Stephanie, good to see you around in 2013, Happy New Year to you!

@tigerdreamer - Yeah, at night when they're flying and buzzing, it sounds like they're attacking!

@lolanae - Thanks Brandie :)

@agentzuckerguss - two of em too!
January 6th, 2013
What's it got in it's claw?
January 7th, 2013
Great image rawwwwwrrrrr
January 7th, 2013
@mej2011 - that's a bit of dried up fungus.

@jameshislop - Cheers James - Rawwwwrrrr!
January 7th, 2013
He's so badass that I had to Fav! And yes, lots of Destiny's over here...
January 7th, 2013
Fantastic....don't mess with him!
January 7th, 2013
Enjoying your commentary - agree with you on the name...l dont think parents realise at the time that the child is stuck with it - my daughter went to school with two brothers, and no kidding, their names were Rainbow & Greenpeace:) Great shot of this amazing beetle!!
January 7th, 2013
@aj1268 - Oh dear... What are they gonna call their children?

@lynnb - not at all!
January 7th, 2013
@michelle58 - and I thought Buffy was an interesting name...
January 7th, 2013
Great insect capture.
January 7th, 2013
@daisy - thanks Kathryn :)
January 7th, 2013
Wicked :)
January 7th, 2013
@jodeewatts - Hey thanks Jodee and thanks for the follow!
January 7th, 2013
After my day, I'm glad I have a roof over my head. I don't know how animals stay dry in rainy weather.
January 7th, 2013
@webfoot - they hide under bigger animals?
January 7th, 2013
Amazing shot, Following!!
January 7th, 2013
Fantastic capture!!!
January 7th, 2013
Dull day at work, this commentary has made me giggle. Just thought of another terrible name for a girl Desire, really.
January 8th, 2013
@todimf - Thanks Cecilia and thank you for the follow :)

@monkeykid - Thanks Monkeykid. :D

@lrn - Oh, if I was the father of that child I would so sing out her name like Bono... "Des-i-i-i-i-i-yer"
January 8th, 2013
Such great detail!
January 8th, 2013
@angeliquenordal - Thanks, he is a cool dude!
January 9th, 2013
I am always looking for bugs and I have only seen these guys 1 time. Nice shot of this dude.
January 9th, 2013
Amazing...and seriously creepy. I guess I am no longer jealous you have bugs and such this time of year after seeing this. If I didn't know it was real, I would think it was something from a movie. I especially don't like the looks of his fish hook hands/feet....
January 9th, 2013
Wow! Amazing insect! I love your perspective! :0)
January 9th, 2013
@hollandcrew - Quite a few of them here in the Tropics.

@boatpainter - the feet don't like letting go! And that head gear does nothing, he can't close it together, it is simple for engaging other males and fighting and holding.

@cjwhite - I positioned him on a stick and had my assistant hold the stick steady in position.
January 9th, 2013
Lovely macro
January 9th, 2013
@runningbk - Thank you.
January 9th, 2013
seriously, the distance a person has got to go just to tell you they like the photo is tiring! :) i loved the rhino beetles, they are so cool! always new when the dog had found one by that lovely hisssssss :D
January 10th, 2013
@loopy12 - Did you dog just play with them?
January 10th, 2013
He looks like a big bully standing guard over his land! Lol. Very kewl looking and a very kewl photo!!!
January 16th, 2013
@kdimagery - oh these guys are not bullies at all! Very gentle beasts, its all a bluff!
