Walthamstow Wetlands by boxplayer

Walthamstow Wetlands

A nice view of one of the reservoirs - soon to become Walthamstow Wetlands - opening next year.

Dave rustled us up some mushrooms on toast for breakfast then we hurriedly got dressed and washed and got out of the house to catch the bus to the Thames Water reservoirs entrance.

Met a huge group of people there and the bird expert who was going to lead us around the reservoirs or Walthamstow Wetlands as they're now known on a migrant bird tour.

A lovely sunny morning it was and we ambled between the big expanses of water and actually saw quite a bit. A couple of peregrines whirling above our heads looking for prey presumably, terns, great crested grebes (and young), a little grebe, loads of snowy white egrets on an island along with a heron's nest complete with fluffy heron chicks, and lots of cormorants, gulls and geese.

There weren't many other people around apart from the usual fishermen - there'll be many more people once the place officially opens next year - at the moment, you can get in by paying £1 for a day permit - bit of a bargain.

Afterwards, we walked back home, and I made another big watermelon, feta and mint salad which we ate in the sunshine outside. Then we went into the loft and unearthed all our camping stuff and some pirate fancy dress (as you do).

Then we popped over to Stoneydown Park where they were having a mini festival - browsed the stalls, bought some drink (a sorrel cordial bellini for me and some Wild Card Brewery beer for Dave), bought some cake to share and then watched a bit of the music from E17 Jazz and Anna Skodbo doing fey folkie stuff with a harp.

Then walked back home and did some pic uploading and general admin stuff. Now it's getting a bit late and I'm wondering if I'll get a chance to make the soup I was planning.
