Christmas dinner by boxplayer

Christmas dinner

Sitting down for Christmas dinner of parsnip and chestnut wellington - Dave, my mum and me.

On the out-of-hours rota for today and tomorrow so diverted the work phone back to me. Nobody called thank goodness.

Mildish Christmas Day and a bit damp. Traditional Christmas breakfast of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs with a glass of prosecco from the huge bottle Dave struggled to uncork.

Brought another glass of prosecco into the sitting room to open presents - this took a while especially as Dave excitedly took out all the 16-something bottles of porter and stout I'd got him from Beerhawk.

Lots of nice pressies as usual - gin (becoming something of tradition too), a book on how to swear, chocolates, a lovely kingfisher pendant, perfume and more.

Left mum watching telly and Dave and I set to making dinner - a nice-looking and easy-to-make parsnip and chestnut wellington. I roasted up the veg and onions and also added a few veggie sausages leaving Dave to do the potatoes and green veg. Stopped to listen to the Queen, then back to the kitchen.

I went on to the next stage - laying out the puff pastry sheet, cutting the sides for the plaiting and then placing the roast veg in the middle. Unfortunately I didn't follow the instructions stricly and had placed the pastry on a chopping board rather than the baking sheet - mainly because all the baking sheets were being used.

So of course it was impossible to get the filled pastry off the chopping board and on to a baking tray - not without a lot of faffing with fish slices and more or less ruining the pretty plaited design.

It came out nice though and was very tasty - one of the nicest veggie Christmas dinners we've had. Try it here

Opened our homemade crackers too - another nice present from Dave, pretty bee studs. Moved in to the sitting room after to watch Doctor Who with our bowls of trifle. A woman doctor finally.

Other festive viewing: Highway Rat, Christmas Upstart Crow and 300 Years of French and Saunders. All very entertaining.

Unfortunately just as we were going to bed, the toilet flush broke again. Turned off the water - could wait till the morning.
