A good fascinating read. When I started it, thought it was going to be too lighthearted - a bit of history laden with cheap gags like a sub-Bill Bryson. But though written with an obvious sense of humour, this never gets in the way of an enthralling history of one of London's most historic areas (Southwark/Borough just south of London Bridge) together with the inns, taverns and alehouses that once thronged the area and the people that worked in and frequented them. More specifically it's the story of the one remaining survivor of a bygone age, the George Inn and how it came to survive despite all the others - often more famous at the time - disappearing. And yes it's likely Shakespeare drank here (or in a previous incarnation that burnt down).
A day full of cold - less headachey today, but more snotty - have almost got through a whole box of tissues. Again alternating between bedroom and garden - even hotter today.
Entertaining interlude yesterday evening when my mum called at 10.15 worried that it was really dark. Both of us confused until we realised she'd fallen asleep much earlier that evening, woken up and thought it was morning.....
3 good things
1. Springwatch - last episode tonight - looking forward to more of Chris Packham's semi-pornographic reactions to the nightjar.
2. Swifts screeching this morning at 6 as I had my first Lemsip of the day.
3. My eyes may be worsening, but I can still read proper books.
Oh, your poor Mum! (I remember you telling me about her!) Funny/not funny! I love a story woven with history and this looks to be a good read! I like the illustration told with the changing fashions!
The book sounds really interesting, thanks for the resume. Hope you feel better soon. I’ve turned the corner, feeling fine now and tested negative today.
The book sounds very interesting. Amuses me that you've had a pub survive longer than any building in our country.
Bittersweet story of your Mum's experience! Glad that you're progressing through the covid stages fairly well by the sounds of it.
It looks like a great read. I can't even tell you how many times I have fallen asleep, and woke up thinking it was the next day. So confusing. I am glad your headache is better.
we are on a water metre so frugal with water. Hope that you feel better soon.
