Back at work today unfortunately. But obviously so much more pleasant at this time of year with fewer people on the tube etc.
Left early to go meet Dave at Leicester Square (via a quick nip into Ecco's sale where I just happened to buy a pair of boots as if by accident).
Had a slightly chaotic meal at Brown's - quite tasty food, but rather dippy (but oh-so-well-meaning) service. The waitress brought our drinks over - and Dave said something about thinking she'd got his drink wrong. I'd thought it was just a red wine, but then he said he'd ordered the Muscadet (a white wine) and I realised that it wasn't red, but tawny. A quick sniff and a taste confirmed it was a dessert wine - presumably the bar man had got confused and poured out a Muscat. We told the amiably clueless waitress and she went off with it, only to return moments later to say that the barman said it was indeed the correct wine and we could always order another one if we didn't like it. I had to almost get up and make as if to go and have it out with the barman, pointing at the menu where it clearly indicated Muscadet in the White Wines section before she took off again and then returned to say, yes of course, the barman was mistaken - and oh by the way, here's the correct wine and you might as well keep the dessert wine as well for free.
And it was a bit slow - especially as we had to be round the corner at 7.30 for Simon Callow's A Christmas Carol at the Arts Theatre (one of Dave's Christmas presents from me). Excellent evening of storytelling-cum-acting. Despite the consumptives in the audience - haven't they heard of Olbas pastilles or a bottle of water?
Afterwards, popped down to Trafalgar Square to look at the Christmas tree and play with slow shutter speeds while Dave vandalised the tree surreptitiously, stealing needles to try and ascertain the exact species.
Those squiggly lights on the water are fab. We are going to see Twelth Night at the Apollo on Saturday. Any thoughts on traffic - Nigel's all for train but I'd quite like to drive most of the way in so we don't end up on a really late train home. He reckons it'll be too busy. I won't tolerate coughing and will go armed with gags!
@judithg - oh wow, that'll be good, nice work getting tickets. Traffic, v. difficult to say - my feeling is that it might be quieter as there are noticeably fewer people in London at the mo (and presumably you're not going earlier on when there might be extra traffic heading for the sales), but the trouble is, you can never tell and it could be hell-ish .... there, I haven't helped at all have I?
@fueast - oh that sounds nice, but we will be driving off to Nottingham that day. Have a good one and don't get in the way of the skaters with your big lenses ....
Gorgeous reflections and the greens of the fountain together with the blues of the tree (although normally you would expect a green tree and blue water!) go together wonderfully!
