London Olympics 2012 10 years on - revisiting photos from the time.
If I'd thought I'd got Olympic fever in the previous few days, that was nothing compared to the sheer excitement of the night before. Nearly 18 months before this date (7 August 2012), I'd applied for Olympics tickets much to Dave's astonishment - but you don't do sport he'd said - and the negative vibes were so overwhelmingly negative that it seemed really strange to him. I failed to get any the first time round and remember getting incandescent with rage that a local like me couldn't get tickets (especially when you heard about all the tickets going to corporate buyers) but I was successful when they opened the second round of applications. And mighty grateful was Dave (and envious those who hadn't applied at the time as tickets were now like gold dust).
My diary notes at the time:
Seven years of waiting, but finally, tomorrow, I'm going to the Olympics in my hometown! Excited doesn't come into it. Some random athletic heats and qualifiers on a Wednesday morning, but who cares, we'll probably see Mo Farah.
Another good day of medals with the triathlon, dressage and Laura Trott's omnium win. But was a real pleasure to watch Chris Hoy win splendidly and bow out as the country's greatest Olympian. And the chap from Grenada picking up his country's first Olympic medal.
My hubby served as a chaplain for the Games so he was at the Stadium most days so we never applied for tickets. He even went to the Opening Ceremony and had a ball. We have managed however to get tickets for the Paralympics and we loved the events.
