Home Library

Chuffed to bits but let's see how long this lasts.

My issue is that my kids don't read. I know how important it is and I'm a real bookworm myself. When they were younger no expense was spared. I spent a mini fortune on children's book, pop up books, rhyming books and they loved them. Now they're at an age where they should be reading their own books, it's just not happening. Cookie's school report wasn't the best on Thursday. His English teacher says that he lacks description and detail when he writes. Something that can only truly be honed when you read extensively. So...I told them that we're going to the library today as I expect them to be reading over the Easter holidays.

I was finding it hard to get them out of the house and I went online to see what time the library closed and realised that I could download an app called Overdrive which allows you to log in with your library card and borrow ebooks onto your tablet/phone. I've now registered both boys.

Cookie has downloaded Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman and Little L has Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I warned them both that I'm watching them. As it's not the classic paper book, I don't want them pulling the wool over my eyes with saying that they're reading and they're really playing. No siree. I am on the case to get my boys reading more and improving their written English. Half an hour a day at the very least. And I'm going to limit their playing time. It's gonna be hard on all of us but I've got to remain more focussed. Wish me luck....
Oh that's really nice that you pay so much attention on their reading habits. I wish when I was younger somebody had told me to read more, i used to hate the compulsory reading and used to read summaries from wikipedia!
I think the key is to make them read what they like.
Godd luck

Oh, good luck with that! My boy was always a bookworm like me until he discovered technology on a phone. He still does love it whenever he reads, but he has to be prised away from his phone first. You are right - reading does amazing things for your vocabulary and it boosted his creative writing no end. All the best in your quest, it is a good one!

@sanaaijaz Well I am trying but it's not easy with kids that aren't interested. They're definitely not ready to thank me just yet. The use of Wikipedia has been banned in the school as the info is so inaccurate 😂

@casablanca Glad to hear that your boy actually likes books. I think it's just a matter of us parents trying to reduce the time spent on gadgets and get back to basics.

It is good that you are interested in reading your children. Reading and writing opens the world. The new media - not everything is really stimulating and conducive to the development of children. But maybe the app and the ebook are a good way.
Best regards!

@jerome the e-books aren't ideal as I'm sure that staring at a tablet all day isn't good for young ones especially but it's definitely better than them not reading at all. Surely.

Reading is something we're happy our kids picked up from us! It's fairly easy to have them take along a book in lieu of their tablets, but it's still a challenge at times. Great that you can download the books. Ebooks are great if you don't have the time/patience to browse at a traditional library.
