today we drove to Cologne to visit the Koelner Dom- Cologne Cathedral a roman catholic church. construction began in 1248 and took with some interruptions until1880 to complete. it's 144.5 meter long, 86.5 meter wide and it's towers 151 meter tall. this cathedral is one of the world largest churches and Germany"s number 1 tourist attraction.
Makes me almost homesick. I grew up on hour away from the city of Cologne and my grandmother used to live there until she died. As a child, I was allowed to spend some summer vacation with her.
Amazing collage, Bruni! The architecture is stunning! The only big cathedral I've gone to is Notre Dame in Paris - it left me in awe!
Thank you so much for your comment on my photo! It's nice to move from place to place for a while, but it's good to settle in at some point. We are still at on-the-go stage, but I am looking forward to living in our new house. Who knows, we might be there for a year, two... and then it will be time to move again! ;-)
Wow this is amazing it looks very much like the duomos we saw in Italy at Christmas time. You managed to get some great shots of the stained glass- mine were very hit and miss.
I was so excited to see your photo today! I have been to this magnificent cathedral also! In 2000, I was 1 of 4 chaperones (I was the token female chaperone ;-) to take twenty 16-18 year old high school students on a World War II trip to Europe. We visited Germany, England, Belgium, The Netherlands and France. 3 of the kids and I were the only ones in our group to walk the over 500 steps to the top of the tower. Bruni, re: my fitness photo today... did you realize that I was the one who added the 2nd line of text?
Bruni, I am sure the upkeep on this cathedral must be involve a lot of time and money. I feel very lucky to have been able to visit it...and let me tell you, I was 10 years younger than I am now when I climbed those stairs, and boy was I huffing and puffing when I got to the top...even the kids were tired out though ;-)
Here is one other bit of trivia from our trip...and oh, this is almost a sacrilege (not really but you will appreciate why I say this in a second.) ...when we were in Munich we went to the Hofbräuhaus but I never had a beer while there...the reason? Before we left on this trip, our headmaster told us chaperones that we could not drink in front of the kids...so when we got there we had the kids asking if THEY could drink since there they saw other students there with beers in hand...we said nope...none of us are going to drink...so, I hope one day I can go back and "tip one" at the the Hofbräuhaus.
