How can a gum tree survive

You know that Grace, my daughter and I walk in a park like setting/forest in Newmarket, Ontario. well we've seen this bare tree (and only this one) in the forest.
I know these trees are growing in a much warmer climate like in Australia for instants.
I goggled to find out about the scribbles on the tree.

This is what it says:
"Moth larvae bore a meandering tunnel through the eucalypt tree's bark at the level of the future cork cambium, a growth layer within the bark. ... It now grows rapidly to maturity, leaving the tree to spin a cocoon at its base where it pupates. Not long after, the bark cracks off, exposing the iconic scribbles beneath. Nov 27, 2012"
Wow! How interesting

parts of Australia get quite cold, even snow. the scribbly gum does grow quite a way down south and it looks like it has quite thrived there

Great find, shot and explanation.
( there are more reasons to grow those crops. One is to steralise the soil from insects.)
