You know that Grace, my daughter and I walk in a park like setting/forest in Newmarket, Ontario. well we've seen this bare tree (and only this one) in the forest.
I know these trees are growing in a much warmer climate like in Australia for instants.
I goggled to find out about the scribbles on the tree.
This is what it says:
"Moth larvae bore a meandering tunnel through the eucalypt tree's bark at the level of the future cork cambium, a growth layer within the bark. ... It now grows rapidly to maturity, leaving the tree to spin a cocoon at its base where it pupates. Not long after, the bark cracks off, exposing the iconic scribbles beneath. Nov 27, 2012"
( there are more reasons to grow those crops. One is to steralise the soil from insects.)
