The Jonas Caves by busylady

The Jonas Caves

We visited this ancient troglodyte village cut by hand from a volcanic cliff. Many of the caves were cut around 400 BC, but have been altered over many years. Parts of it remained inhabited until the French Revolution. Containing a Chapel, a Manor House lived in by the Lord, and a bread baking room used by the community, as well as many other rooms. The large Manor House contained an impressive spiral staircase of 89 steps! Some frescoes still survive.
Wow Judith , how interesting!
