This doe kept a watchful eye on us, but didn't run off right away. We stopped to observe her, she was eating grass and chewing on branches. She hung around for a few minutes before running off with her white tail up in the air.
This was actually taken last week during my girls hiking trip on the MN north shore . Two of my "city slicker" friends had never seen a deer this close. I live in rural Wisconsin and have had many close encounters with them, especially while driving! On a side note - I have actually hit a deer (or a deer hit me) with every vehicle I've ever owned, excluding the one I have right now (knocking on wood). Also have hit a deer with my Mom's car, a friend's car, and my late husbands.
